IC Information:
Name: Wallace “Wally” West (aka, Kid Flash)
Fandom: Young Justice (DC Animated)
Timeline: Episode 14, Revelation (while trapped in Wotan’s cage).
Age: 15
Appearance: Wally is average height for his age, has red hair, green eyes, and the athletic build of a runner. His Kid Flash costume is yellow and red, but he tends to wear comfortable clothes (jeans, t-shirts, and flannels) when he’s being “Wally.”

Abilities:

Wally is a “speedster,” meaning that he has super speed, capable of reaching speeds nears the speed of sound, can vibrate his molecules to create friction and heat (and burns if he’s attempting to free himself), use his body as a high-speed battering ram or cannonball, and even create small tornadoes. His hyper-accelerated molecules also lead to enhanced thought patterns, allowing him to analyze situations in seconds where it takes other minutes, adding to his natural talent in science. He also has hyper-accelerated healing, which allows him to heal wounds in a matter of minutes or hours (or heal a fully fractured broken arm in a few short weeks instead of months). This healing heightens his endurance as he heals so fast that he can take a lot of punishment from his opponents. His superhuman reflexes come in handy with his speed as he can perform back flips while running up walls at high speeds and turn himself into a human pinball when barreling through a jungle and get right back up without injury.

The primary weakness of his abilities is his hyper-accelerated metabolism which, while contributing to his super healing, means he needs to intake large amounts of food as his body burns through calories quickly even when he’s not using his abilities. If he doesn’t get the needed calories, he becomes lethargic and fatigued quickly and can even lose consciousness. He also has problems decelerating when he’s using very high speeds, to the point he often runs into walls or trips (which makes his super healing and reflexes all the more beneficial to him). He also cannot control how he vibrates his molecules, leading to any objects he attempts to vibrate through exploding and him getting nosebleeds from the effort.

Personality:

Sometimes it’s hard to tell just from looking at Wally what part of him is “Wally” and what is “Kid Flash” or if he even considers there to be a difference. Unlike a lot of superheroes who hold onto secret identities with caution and determination, he wouldn’t mind if he could tell everyone. To him, being Kid Flash is the best thing that ever happened to him and he’ll never regret it for one second. Being Kid Flash allows him to be the person he really feels like he should be. He’s confident, flirtatious (to the point that he flirts with grown women like Black Canary and only flirts more when she proceeds to lay him out on the floor afterward), loud, open, and it’s almost like he doesn’t know the meaning of fear. As Kid Flash, Wally can do anything.

But that’s not all there is to him. While he’s still loud, boisterous and has very little tact even as himself, Wally is a boy who hides a lot of his insecurities behind the grins and cheesy remarks. He knows his Uncle Barry didn’t want a partner and that he basically forced him into it, so he doubts that he’ll ever be good enough for to be his partner. He wants people to like him, to be proud of him, and to see him as whom he wants to be himself. His behavior as Kid Flash is to try to embody the person he believes he truly should be more than who he sometimes thinks he really is.

Friends and family are very important to him, as he didn’t have that many friends when he was younger (and doesn’t really have many now in his normal life). As seen when he told Superboy that they should hang out because everyone else was gone, Wally doesn’t really like being alone and seeks out company or groups more often than not. As much as he loves science and running his own tests and experiments, he would choose a day where he gets to spend it hanging out with his friends over a day locked alone in a lab, no contest. When he became Kid Flash he was able to meet all these people he had looked up to as a child and more. It was because of Kid Flash that he was able to meet Robin, who would come to be his best friend, and it was through Kid Flash that he became a member of a team a group of people out doing what he believes anyone with superpowers should do—save the world.

Sure, he doesn’t always get along with them, he says things without thinking (his super speed could be attributed to how fast statements come out of his mouth moving before he can stop them), and can be generally oblivious to things when he doesn’t want to acknowledge them, but he’s a good person and he cares about them. Even Artemis, who he cares about a lot more than he wants to admit—despite all the arguing and fighting they do—although that is changing more and more as time goes on. His attitude is normal upbeat and optimistic, even if cocky and sometimes sarcastic. His lack of tact can be explained by how open he is about things, but then much of what he says comes out in a way he doesn’t intend, such as when Robin offered to show Superboy the sun for the first time and Wally pointed out it was the middle of the night and they could—but then saved it by pointing out they could show Superboy the moon instead. And despite the fact he often can’t keep comments to himself, he managed to show some tact when he tried to keep Superboy in good spirits about Superman’s apparent rejection of him when he brought Superboy home with him the first time. In many ways it comes down to how important the situation is, because if it’s not something Wally sees as a serious, tense situation requiring him to be more careful with his words and actions, he won’t bother. It takes too much time to slow down and do those things when the world already moves slow enough for a boy that thinks as fast if not faster than the faster computer.

Wally may come across as a laid back guy who goes with the flow, but he’s also stubborn and refuses to budge on some things to at times ridiculous extremes. He does not believe in magic, and chooses to only believe in science, reality—things he can define, break down and analyze until he knows exactly how they work. Despite experiencing magic himself—and even being possessed by a Lord of Order, one of the most powerful magical beings in existence—Wally still founds ways to justify and explain away what he had seen and done through science. Wally needs to be able to feel like he is in control or can be in control—that he can manage all things in his life if he just puts enough effort and logic into it. It’s the reason why he decided that if he couldn’t convince The Flash to accept him as his partner, he would turn himself into a speedster and then he would have to do it. It’s not so much that Wally has to control everything in his life, but that he cannot accept that there are things he would not be able to control or explain if he made the decision to do so. Magic is the very embodiment of the unknown and uncontrollable to him and thus he refuses to believe that it exists. And his denial of magic is so strong that some would call it irrational and illogical in and of itself.

Wally is young, impulsive, and still growing as a superhero and as a person, but his priorities in many ways are in the right place. He can be serious and focused when it’s called for, but also gets caught up in his emotions, losing sight of the goal when someone he cares about is in danger or he’s upset about something (such as when he believed that Aqualad didn’t trust him enough to tell him the truth about the possible mole on the Team). At the same time, when he knows the situation is critical, he’s capable of maintaining a cool head even while his own life is in danger, as he did when he had to explain to Robin how to build an EMP emitter while also trying to keep his head above water and not drown. For someone who comes across as very simple and easy to “get” there are many facets to Wally when you get passed the surface and see why he makes such a strong superhero despite his young age.

History:

Wally West was born was in 1995 to Rudolph and Mary West and spent his younger years as a huge Flash fan (not to say he’s stopped being a huge Flash fan; he might be worse now). When he was twelve years old he found the notebooks of his uncle Barry Allen, detailing many of the experiments he had attempted, including his several attempts to recreate the accident that had given the first Flash, Jay Garrick, his abilities. Wally realized that his uncle was the Flash and attempted to convince him to allow him to become his partner, but Barry refused.

So Wally did what any determined twelve-year old with a hero worship complex might do. He took the notebooks and attempted to recreate that same experiment himself with his own chemistry set. This led to a huge explosion that wrecked his house and put him in the hospital, but eventually he found out that he had gained super-speed even though he completely botched the experiment. He tried to convince Barry to let him become his new partner and this time Barry gave in, realizing that it would be better than leaving Wally to his own devices. And after some months of training Wally officially became Kid Flash when he was thirteen.

He worked with Flash as his partner for two years, meeting the other “sidekicks,” Robin, Speedy, and Aqualad during that time. He became very close friends with Robin, to the point that he revealed his secret identity to him early on, despite the fact that Batman had forbidden him from telling anyone. It was on July 4th, 2010 that the Justice League decided that he, Robin, Speedy, and Aqualad were ready to be allowed into the League, but they found out from Speedy that they were only being allowed entrance into the “public-friendly” aspects of the league, such as the Hall of Justice, not the true base of the League, the Watchtower in space.

When the mentors left to take care of a critical situation, Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad decided that to prove themselves to the League they would investigate a fire at a local laboratory for an organization named Cadmus. It was at this time that they realized the aboveground offices were just a front for an underground facility where not only was Cadmus creating living weapons called “genomorphs,” but they had also cloned Superman. They released the clone designated “Superboy,” only for him to be used by Cadmus to subdue them. He eventually broke away from Cadmus’ control and helped them escape, but not without destroying the complex—and gaining the attention of the League. The young superheroes made a stand and in the end (three days later because he refused to answer them before that) Batman agreed to create a covert ops team with them, Superboy, Miss Martian, and eventually Artemis Crock. Red Tornado became their designated supervisor and Black Canary their trainer in physical combat. Wally immediately begins flirting with M’gann (Miss Martian) when they meet, but she is rather oblivious to the seriousness of his attentions.

Before even going on a mission as a team, they tried to familiarize themselves with Mount Justice their new base and went to stop a break in committed by Mister Twister in Happy Harbor, Rhode Island. They were beaten by him more than once and even thought he might be Red Tornado in disguise at one point, but managed to beat him. This helped the Team’s solidarity but they still had not chosen a leader, which lead to some disorder as Batman himself refused to appoint one. Wally tried to get M’gann to go on a date with him by asking her to join him at a campfire, but she invited the others and it became a team-building camping trip. He told them how he became Kid Flash and the others also explain their stories of how they became superheroes.

The Team’s first mission is to Santa Prisca where they find that Kobra has ousted Bane and his crew and stolen their Venom steroid formula, but combined it with the Blockbuster Formula created by Cadmus to make a stronger, more dangerous, Kobra Venom that was permanent. They managed to stop Kobra from selling the new drug to Sportsmaster and in the end Aqualad was unanimously agreed upon and the right person to lead the Team. Later they were given the mission of transporting the parts from the android Amazo (that was capable of copying the superpowers of anyone it came into contact with) to separate labs to research them, but the mission was disrupted by and they had to damage Amazo irreparably before continue with it. Wally was sure that Speedy (Roy Harper) had helped them in the end, only to find out some time later that it was actually Artemis, Green Arrow’s new partner who was also to be the final member of their team. They’re meeting was a rocky start and the two bickered and argued constantly with each other, but overall the Team worked well together.

When Red Tornado found out that a friend of his, Kent Nelson, had been missing for weeks he and the Team travel to Kent’s secret hideaway to check on him and secure the Helmet of Fate that turned him into Doctor Fate if necessary. Wally refused to believe that magic was actually involved in the different things they experienced while inside the Tower of Fate (despite lying to M’gann in order to impress her to begin with), but eventually was trapped on the roof of the Tower with Nelson and the Witchboy, Klarion. Kent used what magic he had left to try to hold Klarion off, but died in the process and Wally had to put on the Helmet of Fate himself to defeat him. Nabu, the Lord of Order dwelling within the Helmet refused to return control of his body until Nelson’s soul swore to remain with him until they found him a proper Host. Wally still denied that magic existed after this, but still kept the Helmet on a shelf in his souvenir room and attended Kent Nelson’s funeral the next day.

Batman has to save the Team during a failed mission fighting against Clayface and the Team separates for a few days of downtime. They all return to their respective lives and Wally joins the “Flash Family” in celebrating the birthday of Jay Garrick, the First Flash. When the team comes back together, they are sent on a reconnaissance mission to the Bialyan desert, where the M’gann is attacked psychically by Psi-mon, only it causes a mass effect on the entire team as they were connected through a telepathic link. Everyone in the team lost six months of their lives, and Wally stumbled upon Artemis, who he brought to a shack in the desert for cover. They treat each other significantly different without the memories of their original animosity fueling their behavior, but once they meet up with the others and regain their memories their actions are strained—although less argumentative.

Weeks later Mount Justice is attacked by two androids that look very similar to Red Tornado, who is not there at the time, and Wally and Conner (Superboy) are trapped in the warped metal shell of Conner’s motorcycle while M’gann and Kaldur’ahm (Aqualad) are trapped in a cage of fire. Wally has to lead Robin through the instructions on how to build an Electromagnetic Pulse emitter to turn off the androids and helps Superboy distract them while Robin and Artemis try to set it off. In the end, Red Tornado arrived, but was hacked by the others and chose to follow them to their base in hopes that he could figure out the truth—but this left the Team feeling like they had been betrayed by them.

The Team then found out that Aqualad had been aware that a mole might be among them, but did not tell anyone, which left Wally feeling betrayed to the point he not only disrespected Kaldur as team leader, he outright ignored some of his commands while on their mission to India. The team was fractured and being attacked from all sides, Captain Marvel (their new “den mother”) was captured and it took Aqualad putting the fear of authority into them before they started to act like a team again. They eventually rescued Captain Marvel, helped the animals that had been injected with the Kobra Venom that had been attacked people in the jungle and returned home, although Superboy brought along Wolf, one of the animals experimented on with him.

The next week giant man-eating plants began attacking cities all over the world and the Justice League went out in full force to fight them. They found out this was a plot by the Injustice League to force the world into submission and the Team was instead given the covert mission to travel to the bayou that the Injustice League was hiding in to put a stop to it. During this mission Kid Flash, Aqualad, Artemis and Superboy are captured and trapped in a magical cage by Wotan.

Roleplay Sample - Log: (A Day in the Life of Wally stuck at Keystone High School. I do apologize for some of the mashed sentences, but...he's a speedster.)

9 minutes and sixfivefourthree seconds left and then he was free. Just nine minutes. And yet it felt like an eternity. He hated this final wait. The home stretch before the victorious ringing of the bell that let them loose from their chains of perpetual boredom and institutionalized education. If his last class was physics or chemistry, he would have been fine. He could have amused himself with whatever chemicals were nearby until the bang sang out, but no. Wally West couldn’t be that lucky.

History. With the most boring teacher ever. Riveting.

Likerivetsbeingdrilledintohisheadohgodisn’thedoneyet?

Wally realized that he’s getting lost in his own head. It happened often enough that he should be better at refocusing, but really who wanted to refocus on a guy that makes the War of 1812 sound like watching two snails fight would be more fun—and faster? He blinked slowly—or slowly for him—and then leaned back in his seat. If he wasn’t careful he’d pass out on his desk by the time the bell did ring in six minutes and forty-thirtynine-thirtyeight seconds. It already felt like it had been another half hour just sitting there.

He didn’t bother letting his eyes roam the room. There was nothing to see but maps and various old posters from different eras in history. Robin would probably be able to use point out exactly on the world map where they ended up in the Bialyan Desert—was Rob going to be there he was always busy with Batman lately, it got boring without him even if itdidgiveWallymoretimetotalktoMegalicious, and why was that clock so slow, were the batteries dead? He should offer to fix them sothisdidn’thappenagain—which made him chuckle softly to himself and prompted looks from the people closest to him in the room, but he ignored them. They already thought he was odd, so him laughing to himself wasn’t something new. He could have whole conversations with himself before they could think O-M-G—wait the British did what at Frenchtown? He wasn’t paying enough attention, that means he’d have to read the chapter before he got home. Great, reading on the run—and still have time left over.

He could hear the clock—not a tick-tick-ticking, but a tiiiiick-toooooock-tiiiiiiick-toooooock that sounded like a creepy kind of moan and oh dude a creepy clock would beawesomeasagag for Halloween—but he’d stopped looking at it because it was too depressing. Instead he let his eyes lose focus and thought about what he’d say to M’gann when he greeted her this afternoon-evening-whatever. He could try to get her alone for another campfire night. Maybe offer to share a blanket or something—it was getting cooler and blankets are perfect for getting close—but he knew Artemis would show up out of somewhere and make some kind of stupid comment—that he would of course ignore because she was Artemis--so maybe he sh--

--the bell rang out and Wally moved so fast that he almost knocked his desk completely onto its side, but he managed to catch it slow enough that it didn’t look suspicious. Good reflexes come in handy. There were snickers breaking out across the room even as everyone else was already gathering their things to leave. Like they weren’t just as ready to get out of there as he was--okay, no, they really weren’t nearly as ready, he was readyfortheweekendandseeinghisteamandamission.

“Perhaps tomorrow you’ll pay more attention to what I’m teaching and not the ether, Mr. West.”

Busted. Wally righted the desk and laughed sheepishly, scratching at the back of his head. “Sorry. Weekend-itis? And it was only the last few minutes after you started talking about raisins in a river or whatever, I swear.”

Grim line, raises eyebrows. Not amused—sorry, Batman was scarier and you couldn’t even see his whole face—but Wally was already swinging his bookbag on his shoulder and giving a wave and he hurried out the nearest door. The fact that he couldn’t run all the way with other people around didn’t even matter. Freedom was one minutes-seconds-moments away.

Roleplay Sample - Journal:

Thisissonotacceptable! [He’s annoyed and waving around what looks like a stick, but can be recognized easily as one of the nutrition bars that “guests” are expected to eat.] Do you see this? This is a freaking piece of nutrient cardboard! How can you expect people to survive off these things?

[He brings it in front of his face looking it over critically.] I mean, it’s not even a good piece of nutrient cardboard, there’s way too much left out. I could make a better one than this in my sleep! Who came up with this and actually let people eat it? They should have their PhD revoked. [Yes, Wally is criticizing food. It must be bad.]

This game includes horrible mental and physical torture of your character. After reading the rules/faq for clarification, how do you expect your character to handle this and continue to function?

That depends on the kind of torture. Wally has a way or rationalizing and outright denying things that upset him, make him uncomfortable, or he just doesn’t want to deal with. It’s not that he doesn’t know that these things exist, but he willfully chooses to look beyond them or downplay their importance as much as possible. It’s a form of mental endurance although constant pressure and attacks on his psyche will more than likely lead to him either breaking or having to face the things he’s hiding from. He can handle physical torture. It will hurt, but he heals and he can rationalize that the pain is temporary to him. The psychological aspect is different as even though he chooses to repress how badly something may affect him, it will only be a matter of time before he can’t.

Questions? Comments? Crazed and creative statements? Those go here.

None!
